Waimanu, which sank on Saturday while sailing from Vanuatu to Auckland was in our last Mahurangi Regatta 2017. She was a Townson 32 and PHIL, her owner, was a member of Mahurangi and Sandspit Yacht Clubs. Her mast went through the hull according to his wife and Hugh Gladwell suspects, that it jumped out of the mast step on the cabin top which has happened before with these boats. Phil is an intrepid voyager and sailed her around the North Island getting through a gale in the Tasman before his trip to the Pacific
